Each year millions of people set New Years Resolutions. The sad fact is that studies show that by February, 80% of New Year’s Resolutions have failed. More so, only 8% of Americans who make New Year’s Resolutions actually keep them all year round. Most resolutions fail due to sabotage caused by a lack of self-discipline and structure. The good news is that these things are easily remedied through the Key2Success planning method.

How to use your digital planner to achieve your New Year’s Resolutions

Dig into the ‘why’ behind your goals

As Viktor Frankl once told us: “a man with a why can bear almost any how”. This means that when we know clearly and believe who heartedly in why we’re striving for something the actual doing of the thing becomes less of an undertaking.

If your goal is to lose 20 lbs. – dig deeper. Why do you want to lose the weight? What in your life will change when you’re 20 lbs. lighter? What is your motivator? Is it to have more energy to play with your kids? Is it to get off high blood pressure medication? Is it just to feel more comfortable in your own skin and in social settings? The Key2Success Planning system walks you through digging into the ‘why’ behind your goal.

Plan your habits into your day

Wanting to do something (and even digging into your why) isn’t enough to achieve it. You must go so far as to schedule your new habit or goal into your day. If your goal is to read more books, don’t just leave it to chance to find time in your day to pick up a book. That is setting yourself up for failure. Instead, schedule it into your day when you will read and for how long. For example, I will wake up journal, drink my coffee, and read for 20 minutes. Write it in your calendar. The same thing goes for workouts, schedule them. I schedule all my workouts for the week on Sunday. When Wednesday rolls around I don’t have to wonder how I’m going to get in my 5 days of exercise per week – I already know when I’m doing them because I’ve scheduled them in ahead of time. The Key2Success habit tracker is a great way to stay on top of goals that involve daily habits.

Create check points to stay on track

Structure is key when it comes to following through on New Year’s Resolutions. Some of the goals we set are big enough they need to be broken down in to smaller goals to be manageable. This is where the Key2Success’ quarterly, monthly, and weekly check-ins keep you on track and moving in the right direction. These check points give you a set space to evaluate what you’re doing and get honest about the tweaks you can make to see even better results towards your big goal.
